The short answer
SEO (search engine optimization) improves where your pages rank in Google and Bing. AEO (answer engine optimization) structures content so it is selected as the direct answer in featured snippets, voice assistants and AI search. GEO (generative engine optimization) shapes how AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity understand, describe and recommend your brand.
They are layers, not alternatives. AI search tools still crawl and rank web pages, so GEO without SEO rarely works.
Side by side
| Aspect | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages and win clicks | Be quoted as the answer | Be named and recommended by AI |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, voice, AI answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| Unit of work | Pages and keywords | Questions and answers | Your brand as an entity |
| Key levers | Technical health, content, links | Answer-first writing, structured data | AI crawler access, consistent brand facts, third-party mentions |
| How to measure | Rankings, clicks, Search Console | Snippets won, answer visibility | How often and how accurately AI tools mention you |
SEO: the foundation
Every AI answer starts with documents someone can retrieve. If your pages are slow, blocked, duplicated or rendered only by JavaScript, they are harder for every system to read. Core SEO work still applies: one page per topic, clear titles, internal links, fast mobile pages, and links from sites people trust.
AEO: write to be quoted
Answer engines prefer content that answers a question directly and can be lifted out cleanly. Practical rules:
- Put the answer in the first sentence under the heading, then add detail.
- Use the question people ask as the heading.
- Use lists and tables for steps and comparisons.
- Add FAQ, HowTo, Article and Organization structured data where it is accurate.
GEO: make your brand easy to describe
When someone asks an assistant for “the best marketing consultant for a SaaS startup” or “a marketing consultant in Dubai”, the model needs a clear, consistent picture of who you are. GEO work:
- Allow AI search crawlers. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity each document separate crawlers for search and for training, so you can allow search and still block training. See the crawler list.
- State the facts plainly. Who you are, what you offer, where, for whom and your credentials, in the same words on your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Earn mentions. Reviews, interviews, guest articles and listings on sites that AI tools retrieve.
- Cover comparisons. Buyers ask AI to compare options. Publish honest comparison and “which should I choose” pages.
Running all three in one plan
- Fix the technical base: crawlability, speed, indexing, redirects.
- Map buyer questions to pages: one page per service or product, plus guides for the big questions.
- Write answer-first content with structured data.
- Open access to AI search crawlers and publish an accurate brand summary.
- Build mentions and links.
- Measure monthly: Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and a fixed set of prompts checked in each AI assistant.
This website follows the same plan. If you want it done for your brand, see SEO, AEO and GEO services.
FAQ
Is AEO the same as GEO?
No. AEO is about getting a specific answer selected for a specific question. GEO is about how generative AI understands and recommends your brand across many questions. They overlap heavily in practice.
Do I still need SEO if people use ChatGPT?
Yes. AI search tools retrieve and rank web content, so pages that are crawlable, fast and well structured are more likely to be used in their answers.
What is AIO?
AIO is sometimes used for AI optimization or for Google's AI Overviews. Either way it refers to the same work described here: making content easy for AI systems to retrieve, understand and cite.
